Omie has been married for three years, yet has borne no children. Her confidence and status as a contributing member of the village wanes. Although her husband never complains, she feels she is less than a complete woman. During the dry season, three and a half years after her wedding, Omie is with child! She stays close to home until her child is born. After the summer heat has passed, Omie decides to go to the market, but instead of carrying her new baby on her back, she ties a sash about her waist, carrying her daughter in her arms.
