Jazz was born in the southern region of the United States about 100 years ago. It evolved from slave songs and spirituals but its roots can be found in the musical traditions of both Africa and Europe; in fact, some people say that jazz is a union of African and European music. From African music, jazz got it's rhythm and feel, its blues quality and sensibility of playing an instrument in your own expressive way. From European music, jazz got its harmony and most of its instruments. New Orleans was the perfect city for all these elements to come together as it was a port city with people arriving from all parts of the world. This is where musicians had the opportunity to play together, learn from each other and blend all of these elements. Today, jazz is played and listened to by people of all ages, cultures, and ethnicities. This 2019 All That Jazz Calendar pays tribute to the singers, musicians, songwriters and record labels that are integral to the form of music known as jazz.
